EMPLOYEE HEALTH IS KEY TO BUSINESS SUCCESS

It’s a simple but important fact: business success is underpinned by employee health. By investing in the health and wellbeing of employees, businesses can save millions of dollars every year. In 2019, organisations in Malaysia are reported to have lost on average 73.3 days of work time per employee per year due to absence and presenteeism*. This is estimated to have cost organisations on average RM1,460,774 a month in 2019.

Identifying and addressing risks to employee health is therefore critical to business success.

Since so much of our time is increasingly spent at work, it is important that we understand, measure, and ultimately improve wellbeing in the workplace. That’s why we have created the Healthiest Workplace by AIA Vitality survey.

* Absence refers to the actual absence of employees from work. It is a good indicator of the health of employees, taking into account absences due to sickness or health problems.

* Presenteeism refers to a scenario when an employee clocks in but is unable to perform work due to health issues, loss of concentration from lack of sleep, or stress, among others.

WHAT IS THE HEALTHIEST WORKPLACE BY AIA VITALITY SURVEY?

The Healthiest Workplace by AIA Vitality is a comprehensive survey of the health and wellbeing of employees around Asia-Pacific. In 2019, the survey in Malaysia saw a total participation of 230 organisations and 17,595 employees.

The Healthiest Workplace by AIA Vitality survey provides an overview of employees’ health and wellbeing profile which gives employers insights to identify and carry out effective interventions to improve the health of their workforce and to help their organisations to be more productive.

For employers who participate in the survey, they will be provided a comprehensive Organisational Health Report, which will give a holistic view of their employees’ health and well-being so that effective interventions can be identified to help organisations to be more productive.

Employees who complete the survey will immediately receive a personal health report outlining their AIA Vitality age, key lifestyle and health risks as well as suggestions for improvements.

Our Academic partners, RAND Europe, and academic institutions across the region conduct research and analysis for The Healthiest Workplace by AIA Vitality. The academic institutions assist RAND to validate the survey questionnaire and findings in each market. Research focuses on understanding productivity loss and how workplace wellness strategies can be employed to reduce this loss.

In Malaysia, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) is the local academic partner working with AIA and RAND Europe to provide academic advisory to AIA Malaysia.

AIA VITALITY AGE

The Healthiest Workplace Survey by AIA Vitality uses a scientific measure of “AIA Vitality Age”, which shows the impact of a range of lifestyle, clinical and mental wellbeing risks on an individual’s long-term health. The difference between a person’s AIA Vitality Age and their actual age is referred to as their AIA Vitality Age gap, which corresponds to the predicted impact of these risks on their life expectancy. If a participant is particularly fit and healthy, their AIA Vitality Age could be lower than their actual age. However, for the majority of people, AIA Vitality Age will be higher than actual age.
